The flight from St. George, Utah, to Boston, Massachusetts, had been a quiet one so far. Kyle had disconnected himself from anything WITSEC could use to find him. Heâd purchased burner phones for himself and Rachel. He was wholly alone, trying to keep someone alive with just his own skill set, and he didnât know if it would be enough. As he sat beside her on the plane, he prayed.
Lord, I need You to work through me. Give me the power, the insight, the knowledge to keep Rachel safe. Help me find who is at the center of deceit within WITSEC so it can be a trusted organization again. Bring Seth Black and anyone who has helped him to trial. I know we donât always see justice prevail here in our time, but for the sake of humanity, help me end the reign of this madman.
Before he left St. George, heâd secured enough cash to operate off the grid. There were one or two agents he did completely trustâinspectors he knew had turned down a bribe in the pastâbut he would not reach out for help until he absolutely needed to.
âI know you blame Javier for what happened. For the tracker on your car. For the assault on the hospital,â Rachel said, breaking into his thoughts. âBut people will do extreme things to protect their loved ones. If Seth hadnât saved his daughter after that accident and made Armijo feel like he owed him something on a personal level when he never did, this wouldnât have happened. Itâs Sethâs manipulation that twisted him. Sometimes I feel like we shouldnât be so hard on people when theyâve been emotionally manipulated to such a degree that they donât even see themselves anymore.â
He turned to look at her, assessing her. âWas that you? And how you feel about how others judge you?â
Rachel wiped the condensation from the plastic cup she held. âEven very intelligent people can be gullible. Self-deception is the strongest of all defense mechanisms. Iâm not saying Javier shouldnât be held responsible for the things he did in abandoning from the ideal of his job to do the bidding of a mass murderer. But clearly there were mitigating circumstances.â
Kyle stared at her in disbeliefâthat she could offer such grace to a person who had set her up to be killed. Upon their first meeting in Springdale, sheâd been all about exacting justice. Now she seemed to want to deliver more grace than had been afforded to her. He thought through other witnesses he had worked with, and never had he protected one who had such a sense of forgiveness.
âI am amazed by you,â Kyle said, the words slipping out before he could pull them back.
Rachel smiled, shyness causing her to drop her eyes from his. âI donât know why. You see things like this every day working in the justice system. People making choices they shouldnât be driven to by extenuating circumstances. People will do lots of wrong things to get control back over their lives.
